Superior Court of California

Superior Court of California is located in Del Norte County at 450 H Street, Room 209, Crescent City, CA 95531. The Superior Court is the only trial court in California that handles both felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, civil case including small claims matters, probate cases, juvenile dependency and delinquency matters, traffic cases, and family law matters.

The court also hears appeals from decisions made by lower courts and administrative agencies. The Superior Court has exclusive jurisdiction over all felony criminal cases and over all civil cases where the amount in controversy exceeds $25,000.

The Superior Court for Del Norte County consists of two Superior Court Judges and one Commissioner. The current judges are: Hon. William P. Stewart, Presiding Judge and Hon. Dale A. Ikeda, Associate Judge. The current Commissioner is: Hon. Jon D. Norman.

Civil cases are filed in the Superior Court by case type: small claims, unlimited civil, or complex civil. Small claims cases are limited to disputes where the amount of money in controversy does not exceed $5,

In order to file a small claim, the following must be true:

The case must be for money only (no property damage, no personal injury, and no eviction cases);

The amount of the claim cannot exceed $5,000;

The case must be against a person, business, or government agency located in California; and,

You must be able to prove your case with documents and/or witnesses.
